Kenya's New Visa Update: Easier Entry with the E-Thrill Pass

Kenya has modernised its borders for global travellers with less paperwork and smoother arrivals. While some nationalities have long enjoyed visa-free entry, Kenya’s updated entry framework now allows most visitors to skip traditional visa queues and avoid common visa hassles. The goal is clear: simpler arrivals, stronger trade ties, and a more seamless travel experience.

Under its visa-free framework, Kenya introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system, replacing conventional visitor visas with a digital pre-travel clearance.

How the Kenya eTA System Works

As announced by President Ruto and implemented from January 2024, travellers intending to visit Kenya are required to apply for an eTA through Kenya eTA Application platform prior to departure. The Kenya eTA allows short-term travel for approved purposes, including tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits, medical treatment, transit, etc, subject to immigration regulations.

The application process typically includes:

• A valid passport from one of the countries eligible for Kenya eTA, for identity verification.
• Payment of the applicable eTA fee.
• Additional supporting details or documents where required for security validation.

Once approved, the eTA is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, allowing Kenyan immigration authorities to verify authorisation on arrival and significantly streamline border processing.

Fees & Entry Charges

Although Kenya eliminated traditional visa issuance for most short-term travellers, entry is not entirely free. A standard Kenya eTA Fee applies to most non-exempt visitors.

Validity and Stay Conditions

Kenya’s eTA is issued as single or multiple entry, with a validity ranging from 90 days to 1 year. Each entry permits a maximum stay of up to 90 days, subject to immigration approval on arrival.
