Before Travelling to Kenya

Online e-Visa Application

Kenya has streamlined its entry process by moving to a fully digital system. Please note the following critical details regarding your entry authorisation:

  • Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA): Kenya has transitioned from traditional visas to a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. All visitors must obtain this digital permit online before boarding their flight, as manual visas are no longer issued upon arrival.
  • How to Apply: Applications are processed through the official Kenyan government portal. Ensure you have your passport details and travel itinerary ready before starting the session.
  • Submission Timeline: To account for processing times and potential queries, submit your application at least 2 weeks (but no less than 7 days) before your departure.
  • Exemptions: While many nationalities now require an eTA, some regional neighbours and specific treaty partners may be exempt. Always verify your status via the official portal or your local consulate to confirm if you fall under the waiver program.

COVID-19 Update

Traveller Advisory: Please note that the emergency health measures implemented during the 2020-2023 global pandemic have been lifted. As of May 2023, proof of vaccination and pre-departure PCR testing are no longer required for entry into Kenya.

While these restrictions are now a matter of the past, travellers should remain mindful of the following:

  • Destination Requirements: While Kenya is open, always check the health protocols of your transit countries or your final destination if you are on a multi-country itinerary.
  • Health Monitoring: Although the specific COVID-19 mandates have ended, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) continues to monitor general public health. It is always wise to carry your standard vaccination records (such as Yellow Fever, which is often required) for a smooth transit.

Kenya offers a world-class experience for every traveller. By securing your digital authorisation early and staying aware of the current health landscape, you can focus on the incredible sights and sounds of your upcoming journey.
