Kenya has transitioned to a visa-free entry model for all global citizens. While traditional visas are no longer required for stays of up to 90 days, all international travellers (except for specific exemptions) must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. This digital system is designed to enhance security and streamline border processing.
Kenya now allows citizens of all countries to enter for tourism or business without a visa. This policy aims to boost international travel and simplify the entry process, positioning Kenya as a more accessible global destination.
The first group of travellers under the ETA system arrived on January 5, 2024. Despite a minor initial delay during the transition, the system is now fully operational, facilitating faster immigration clearance for visitors.
The ETA is a mandatory pre-screening requirement. It must be applied for online at least 3 business days before travel. It replaces the old visa system for all non-EAC citizens.
East African Community (EAC) Nationals Exempt from ETA:
Citizens of the following EAC member states do not need an ETA and can enter using a valid passport or travel document:
To complete the application, you must provide the following:
Based on your specific purpose of entry, you may need:
Standard processing takes 3-5 Days. It is recommended to apply well in advance, though "Priority" processing is available for urgent travel.
Once approved, you will receive an email confirmation. You must print this document or save it in the official mobile app to present to airline staff and immigration officers.
Keep a digital and physical copy of your passport. Ensure you also carry supporting documents like hotel vouchers and business invitations, as immigration officers may request them upon arrival.
Citizens of EAC countries remain exempt from the ETA. They may enter Kenya using only their national passport or recognised travel ID.
The ETA expires once you exit Kenya. It cannot be renewed or reused for multiple entries; a fresh application is required for every visit.
The e-visa portal is being phased out in favour of the ETA system. While existing e-visas are honoured, all new travel authorisations must be processed through the ETA platform.
