New Kenyan Visa policy: Visa-free travel for South Sudanese citizens

Kenya and South Sudan have finalised a reciprocal visa-free agreement, significantly easing cross-border movement for their citizens. This policy, signed by the respective interior ministers, eliminates the requirement for South Sudanese nationals to obtain a visa before entering Kenya.

The initiative aligns with the East African Community (EAC) goals of regional integration. Established to foster cooperation among member states, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, the EAC promotes the free movement of people and labour as a core pillar of its standard market protocol.

Visa-Free Countries for Travel to Kenya

While Kenya transitioned to a comprehensive Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system in 2024, specific exemptions remain for regional partners and strategic allies.

  • EAC Exemption: Citizens of South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and the DRC are exempt from both the visa and the eTA requirements.
  • Identification: Nationals of Uganda and Rwanda can use their national ID cards for entry, while South Sudanese citizens must present a valid passport.
  • Global Access: Kenya provides visa-exempt status to over 40 countries for short-term stays, though most non-EAC travellers must now apply for an eTA at least three days before departure.

Visa Requirements for Citizens of South Sudan

Under the current arrangement, South Sudanese citizens can enter Kenya for up to 6 months without a travel permit or fee. This is a reciprocal agreement; Kenyan citizens receive the same privilege when entering South Sudan.

While South Sudan generally requires foreign visitors to obtain visas through an embassy or on arrival, it has waived these fees and requirements for Kenyans. Travellers must still ensure their passports are valid for at least 6 months beyond their date of entry.

Benefits of the new policy

The removal of travel barriers offers several strategic advantages:

  • Economic Growth: Simplified travel encourages cross-border trade and investment between the two nations.
  • Educational Opportunities: South Sudanese students can more easily access Kenyan academic institutions.
  • Tourism Boost: Eliminating fees and paperwork makes Kenya a more attractive destination for South Sudanese leisure travellers.
  • Regional Integration: The policy strengthens the diplomatic ties within the EAC and serves as a model for neighbouring states.

Previous visa requirements for South Sudanese citizens

Before this agreement, South Sudanese nationals had to apply for a visa at a Kenyan diplomatic mission or pay a visa-on-arrival fee. This process often involved administrative delays and a mandatory $50 fee. The new policy replaces this system with a seamless, cost-free entry process at all border points and airports.

Other visa options for foreign visitors to Kenya

For travellers not covered by the EAC exemption, Kenya offers the following entry methods:

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): A mandatory digital permit for most international visitors. It is typically processed within three business days and is required for a single entry.
  • East African Tourist Visa: A joint visa that allows travel between Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda for 90 days.
  • Courtesy and Diplomatic Visas: Issued to officials and diplomats on government business, usually free of charge.

Important Considerations for Travellers

To ensure a smooth trip to Kenya, travellers should keep the following in mind:

  • Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.
  • Health Documentation: Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic zone.
  • Safety Awareness: Visitors should monitor local travel advisories and exercise caution in border regions or crowded urban centres.
  • Wildlife Protocol: When visiting national parks, always use licensed tour operators and maintain a safe distance from animals.
  • Respectful Conduct: Modest dress is recommended in religious areas, and visitors should remain mindful of local cultural traditions.
